What Is a Photofacial?
A photofacial is performed using an intense pulsed light (IPL) laser. The laser system emits pulses of bright light that penetrate the layers of skin being treated. The energy emitted from the light creates heat that is absorbed by the skin. This triggers the production of collagen which helps to make the skin tighter, firmer, and smoother.
An IPL photofacial can also be used to target and treat hyperpigmentation and sunspots by breaking up the cluster of melanin in the skin.

Ideal Candidates for Photofacial Treatment

The photofacial is not recommended for patients with darker skin tones or tanned skin. Patients with deep wrinkles, scars, or severe acne should consider other skin treatments. What to Expect During Your Photofacial
A photofacial treatment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour to complete based on the size of the area being treated and other factors. Before the treatment begins, your skin will be cleansed and a cool gel will be applied to the areas being treated.
The skin may take on a reddish color during the treatment and a small amount of swelling may occur which is common. You may feel a warm sensation over the treated areas but there should be little to no discomfort during the treatment process.
What to Expect After Your Photofacial
There is no lengthy recovery period required following a photofacial. There will be some puffiness and redness around the treated areas following your photofacial. The skin may be sensitive to the touch and there may be a feeling similar to a sunburn that will subside over the next day or so. Applying an ice pack to the area can provide some relief.
Sunspots, freckles, and other blemishes may become darker before the skin begins to flake and their appearance reduces. It is best to avoid aggressive scrubbing and exfoliating the treated areas.
Multiple treatment sessions will likely be required to achieve optimal results. The number of sessions required may be adjusted accordingly depending on the result of each treatment. It is important to commit to the recommended number of treatment sessions to achieve ideal results.
